We are currently seeking exceptional school leavers for a number of Apprentice roles within our 450 strong Bridges & Structures Sector across the UK and Ireland. This is a wonderful opportunity to join our growing design teams receiving ‘on the job training’ working on a wide range of bridge engineering projects across the region and beyond whilst being allocated a senior engineer or senior technician who will provide mentoring during the development period.
Successful applicants will continually develop their skills in bridge engineering with the aim of becoming a world class civil engineering technician or engineer and will be supported at college. Projects we are currently working on include:
Riyadh Metro – design of metro viaducts for this $22BN project
Forth Replacement Crossing – Category III Check of the new crossing across the Forth Estuary
Wessex Capacity Alliance - £350M rail enhancement project including Waterloo Station
London Highways Alliance Contract for Transport for London (TfL); Bridge maintenance schemes from investigation through to detailed design
Northern Outfall Sewer Bridges for Thames Water – Strengthening of a number of 19th Century bridges
London Borough of Bromley – Bridge Feasibility Study
A14 Huntingdon to Cambridge Improvements
Responsibilities will include:
Production of CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings
Preparation of simple bridge and structures calculations
Undertaking graphical design and desk top publishing
Supporting the administration of projects, including maintaining records
Assisting with data review and analysis
Ensuring outputs are accurate and meet the required standards
Contributing to providing solutions to problems
Assisting with site visits to collect information or observe existing situations
Our STEP programme is designed to recruit school-leavers who show commitment, aptitude and enthusiasm, into science, engineering and technology careers with us. You will combine work-based on-the-job training and learning with further studies and must be willing to progress your career. After an initial probationary period you must be willing to undertake a day release course at a Further Education College to study a relevant course such as Civil Engineering BTEC Level 3 or Civil Degree Apprenticeship, depending on your level of education, and ultimately achieving Incorporated Engineer status and subsequently Chartered Engineer status.

No experience is necessary but the position is ideally suited to school leavers at either GCSE or A-Level standard (or equivalent) who can demonstrate:
Minimum of 5 GCSE’s (or Scottish Standard Grade or Junior Certificate in Ireland) at grade ‘C’ or above, including Mathematics & English
Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software
Demonstrate an interest in and a desire to pursue a career in Bridges & Structures Engineering
Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.
Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic
Ability to demonstrate attention to detail
Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organize parts of projects
English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports
